- Paracetamol or ibuprofen
- Medicated lozenges containing local anaesthetics, antiseptics, or anti-inflammatory agents
- Anaesthetic sprays (although evidence of their effectiveness is limited)
Antibiotics
Antibiotics are typically unnecessary for sore throats as they rarely alleviate symptoms or expedite recovery. They are only prescribed if a bacterial infection is suspected.
During your consultation, our pharmacists will inquire about your medical history and symptoms to rule out any underlying conditions requiring urgent attention from a GP or other healthcare providers. They may conduct a visual examination of your throat using a light and tongue depressor, and assess for swollen glands by palpating your neck.
Consulting a Pharmacist at Consult
Our pharmacists may recommend over-the-counter products to alleviate your symptoms. If further treatment is deemed necessary based on your symptoms, they can provide you with a course of antibiotics, if appropriate.
The Pharmacy First service is only available for individuals who are five years and above. However, our pharmacists can offer self-care advice or refer your child to a GP as needed.
If your symptoms persist or worsen, consult a GP for further evaluation.
