Sinusitis

Sinusitis refers to the inflammation of the sinuses, often due to an infection. It’s a common condition that typically resolves within four weeks, but medications can expedite recovery if symptoms persist.

Sinusitis commonly follows a cold or flu, presenting symptoms such as:
  • Pain, swelling, and tenderness around the cheeks, eyes, or forehead.
  • Blocked or runny nose Reduced sense of smell.
  • Green or yellow nasal discharge.
  • High temperature, accompanied by other symptoms like headaches, toothaches, or bad breath

Self-Care Measures

Mild sinusitis can often be managed at home by:

  • Getting adequate rest and hydration
  • Taking over-the-counter painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen (avoid aspirin for children under 16)
  • Avoiding allergens, smoking, and using homemade salt water solutions to clean the nasal passages

Pharmacist Assistance

We can provide guidance on suitable medications, including:

  • Decongestant nasal sprays or drops to alleviate nasal congestion Salt water nasal sprays or solutions to cleanse the nasal passages
  • Our pharmacist can provide additional treatments as needed, eliminating the need for a GP visit.

Consulting a Pharmacist at Consult

At Consult Pharmacy, our pharmacists are here to assist individuals aged 12 and over.

During your consultation, our pharmacists will inquire about your medical history and symptoms to rule out any underlying conditions requiring urgent attention from a GP or other healthcare providers.

They may recommend pain relief and over-the-counter products tailored to alleviate your symptoms, such decongestant nasal sprays or drops to alleviate nasal congestion, salt water nasal sprays or solutions to cleanse the nasal passages and if deemed appropriate, a course of antibiotics.

If you are younger than 12 years of age, the Pharmacy First service is not available. However, our pharmacists can offer self-care advice or refer you to a GP as needed.

Please note: Sinusitis, under the Pharmacy First / NHS funded service is only available for individuals 12 years and over, therefore we are only able to assist for this age range. Source: NHS England – February 2024
